HC Deb 22 March 1945 vol 409 c987
48. Mrs. Cazalet Keir

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that consultations are now taking place with the Dominions in connection with certain Poles being granted British nationality, he will take this opportunity to discuss with them the question of British-born women retaining their nationality on marriage with an alien.

Mr. Attlee

No, Sir.

Mrs. Cazalet Keir

In view of the great difficulty of finding time for discussing this matter at regular Dominion conferences, will the right hon. Gentleman not reconsider it?

Mr. Attlee

We have considered dealing with it at an appropriate time. I am quite sure that the present time is not appropriate.

Commander Agnew

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that in a ease where a British women marries a Pole, the conditions will be such as to make the woman happy and proud to retain her husband's nationality?

Mr. Attlee

I am afraid that the hon. and gallant Member is attributing greater power to the Government than we possess.
