asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of Surtax payable for the financial years 1939–40, 1940–41, 1941–42, 1942–43, 1943–44, together with the respective rates of Surtax chargeable for those years.

As the answer contains a considerable number of figures, I will circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

The total Surtax payable in respect of assessments so far made for the years 1939–40 to 1943–44 is estimated as follows:

Further Surtax assessments may be made up to six years after the end of the year of assessment, so that the figures given above are not yet complete.

The rates of Surtax chargeable have not been varied throughout these five years and they are as follows:
