HC Deb 09 March 1945 vol 408 cc2424-5

Lords Amendment: In page 15, line 41, at end, insert:

"Section ten After subsection (1) there shall be inserted the following subsection:
'(1A) In relation to service on or after the first day of April, nineteen hundred and forty-five, paragraph (a) of the proviso to the foregoing subsection shall have effect as if for the reference therein to two thousand pounds per annum there were substituted a reference to three thousand pounds per annum.'"

1.8 p.m.

Mr. Ede

I beg to move, "That this House doth agree with the Lords in the said Amendment."

When the original Act was passed £2,000 was regarded as beyond the maximum that was likely to be paid to any director of education who came within the terms of the Measure. Since that time the importance of this office appears to have grown in the eyes of local education authorities, and a number of directors of local education authorities are now receiving salaries in excess of £2,000. In fact, one has recently retired and could only be pensioned as if his salary had been £2,000. In order that persons may reap during their pensioned period the benefits of the generosity of their employers we move the Amendment and I trust that the House will accept it.

Question put, and agreed to. [Special Entry.]

Subsequent Lords Amendments agreed to.
