HC Deb 01 March 1945 vol 408 c1535
11. Mr. Burke

asked the Minister of Labour what arrangements he is making for the employment of workers at present engaged on war work in Burnley, seeing that Government contracts are falling off.

Mr. Bevin

My officers are in close touch with the position at the factories concerned, and are dealing with the reallocation of the workers as they become available. There are substantial demands for additional labour for important work in the Burnley district and no special difficulty is being experienced in placing the workers affected.

Mr. Burke

Is it not as well to take these things in plenty of time, because there are a number of unemployed and others who have been warned that they will be redundant shortly?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir, we warn all the unions and employers in advance that redundancy is to take place and then we proceed to go through the list and make the adjustments rather than have to come down with a sudden cut, throwing the whole of the workers on the streets.
