HC Deb 01 March 1945 vol 408 c1552
39. Captain Cunningham-Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he proposes to introduce legislation to legalise the playing of poker as well as bridge in clubs.

Mr. H. Morrison

I have no power to pronounce an opinion on the question of law whether the playing of poker in clubs is in all circumstances illegal, and I can only say that I do not propose to introduce legislation to amend the law relating to gaming.

Commander Locker-Lampson

What is poker?

Captain Cunningham-Reid

Is not present legislation being unfairly administered, in view of the fact that small social clubs are being raided while large clubs, with a distinguished membership, are continuing to play poker?

Mr. Morrison

I notice with interest that my hon. and gallant Friend has joined in class warfare. My information does not confirm what he says.

Lieut.-Commander Gurney Braithwaite

Is it not possible to study poker faces on the Front Bench at Question time?
