HC Deb 01 June 1945 vol 411 c491
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Eden)

I have received information that General Humblot, commanding the French Forces in Syria, informed the General Officer Commanding the British Ninth Army last night that he had received instructions from Paris not to oppose the order of the Commander-in-Chief, Middle East. I am sure that this information will be warmly welcomed in all parts of the House. [HON MEMBERS: "Hear, hear."] We have confidence that we can now rely upon all concerned to co-operate in the complete restoration of law and order which is, indeed, the essential first step to a solution of this complex problem.

His Majesty's Government hope most sincerely that before long it will also be possible to open those conversations in London to which I referred yesterday, and as a result of which it is our aim and desire to promote a final settlement of this vexed problem.

Mr. Thorne

May I ask what has been the cause of all this trouble?

Mr. Eden

It would take rather long to explain.
