HC Deb 31 January 1945 vol 407 c1431
11. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the penal code to be used in Greece is that which was in force under the Metaxas régime or some other.

Mr. Law

The penal code is that which was in force during the Metaxas régime but it dates from long before Metaxas came to power. I understand that the punishments which it lays down for crimes such as murder and looting have remained unaltered since before the Metaxas régime. It has already been made clear in statements both by His Majesty's Government and by the Greek Government that these are the crimes on which prosecutions will be based and that no one will be charged simply because he took part in the revolt or for holding certain political views.
