HC Deb 26 January 1945 vol 407 c1143
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Eden)

I deeply regret to have to inform the House that the hon. and gallant Member for North Bristol (Captain Bernays) and the hon. Gentleman, the junior Member for Antrim (Mr. D. Campbell), who were visiting our Forces in Italy, are reported missing. Their aircraft which was piloted by a very experienced Royal Air Force pilot, took off on Tuesday morning from Rome for Brindisi and has not been heard of since. Reports from Italy state that there was bad weather, including snowstorms, near Brindisi. It is possible that the aircraft has landed safely, but that, owing to difficulties of communication, it has not yet been possible to report that fact. A search for the missing aircraft was begun as soon as weather conditions allowed. The House will be told at the earliest opportunity of any further news. The relatives have been informed. I am sure the House would wish me to express our sympathy to them during this anxious time, and our hope that the missing aircraft may yet be found to be safe.

Hon. Members

Hear, hear.
