HC Deb 18 January 1945 vol 407 cc371-2
91. Sir Ralph Glyn

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that numbers of men who have recently been trained at private wireless schools and have gained certificates of proficiency in radio-telegraphy are unable to secure employment as wireless operators in the Merchant Navy; and whether he will consider notifying these schools of the position.

The Postmaster-General (Captain Crookshank)

I am aware that at the present time there is a surplus of trained wireless operators. The needs of the Merchant Navy have fluctuated enormously during the war, and it has been the practice of my Department to keep the wireless telegraphy schools advised, so far as possible, of the general trend of employment. It was foreseen last June that the present situation was likely to arise, and the schools were then informed. They have been reminded of the position on two occasions since. I should perhaps add that it is clearly stated on the Post Office form, which must be completed by every intending student, that the grant of the Postmaster-General's Certificate carries no guarantee of employment.
