HC Deb 18 January 1945 vol 407 cc361-2
62. Sir John Mellor

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can now give an assurance that officers who were compulsorily commissioned in the Indian Army will be enabled, if they wish, to transfer forthwith to the British service.

Mr. Amery

This question is still under discussion with the Government of India and the War Office, but I hope to make a statement very soon.

Sir J. Mellor

As these officers have been improperly treated, why cannot this matter be dealt with with the utmost dispatch?

Mr. Amery

I hope the matter will be settled very soon and that I shall be able to make a statement.

Mr. A. Bevan

Will the right hon. Gentleman recollect that this matter was raised as far back as before last August, and ought we not really to have a decision on it, as many of us have had letters from relatives pressing for this matter to be cleared up?

Mr. Amery

I quite understand that.
