HC Deb 27 February 1945 vol 408 cc1207-8
1. Mr. Channon

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he can make a statement on the disturbances which occurred at a Yugoslav camp at Leigh-on-Sea, on 19th January, when a Yugoslav officer alleges that he was kidnapped by Partisans and ill-treated.

The Secretary of State for War (Sir James Grigg)

This case is being investigated.

Mr. Channon

Will my right hon. Friend consult the Home Secretary, with a view to instructions being given to the police of the borough of Southend, that this sort of thing shall not happen again?

Sir J. Grigg

Perhaps I had better investigate the case first.

Captain Duncan

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this incident savours of Gestapo methods; and will he see that Gestapo methods are not tolerated in this country?

Sir J. Grigg

I assure my hon. and gallant Friend that if there was any Gestapo method it was not used by the Army.

Miss Ward

May I ask on what date the incident occurred?

Sir J. Grigg

No, not without notice.
