§ 49. Mr. Tinkerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is in a position to state how the first period of the "Pay as you earn" Income Tax has worked; and whether the assessment forms now being sent out could be drafted to give more details of what has been deducted and the balance due either way.
§ Sir J. AndersonThe first year of "Pay as you earn" does not end until 5th April next, but I am glad to be able to say that, in general, the scheme is working smoothly. I assume that the second part of the Question refers to the statements showing the employee's tax position at the end of the year 1943–44, after taking account of the tax cancelled for that year and the amount provisionally deducted in the months before "Pay-as-you-earn" began. The statements contain a considerable amount of detail, but any employee who desires further information or explanation should approach the Tax Office.
§ Mr. TinkerWill the right hon. Gentleman take suggestions from Members of Parliament who think that an improvement should be made in the statements that are sent out?
§ Sir J. AndersonCertainly.
