HC Deb 13 December 1945 vol 417 c624
72. Mr. Stokes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much gold has been purchased on behalf of His Majesty's Government through the Exchange Control Fund since 1st April, 1940, or other near date.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

My right hon. Friend is not prepared to publish details of these operations.

Mr. Stokes

As this matter has much bearing on the Debate now in progress in the House, may I ask my hon. Friend whether I would be grossly in error in supposing it is of the order of £400,000,000 sterling?

Mr. Hall

I am sorry, but I cannot add to the reply which I have given on behalf of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor.

Mr. Stokes

That is what it is.
