HC Deb 13 December 1945 vol 417 cc618-9
66. Dr. Barnett Stross

asked the Minister of Labour whether he has any avail- able data as to the effect on industrial production of a five-day week; and whether he is aware that it is desirable that Saturday morning work should be abolished as being wasteful.

Mr. Isaacs

The advantages and disadvantages of the five-day week have been reviewed from time to time in the Annual Reports of the Chief Inspector of Factories. The question whether the abolition of Saturday morning working in a particular industry or establishment is desirable is a matter for negotiation between the employers and workers concerned, in the light of their expert knowledge of all the relevant circumstances.
