HC Deb 12 December 1945 vol 417 cc413-4
67. Mr. Osborne

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware of the shortage of mantles for Aladdin lamps in North Lincolnshire; and since this is causing hardship to people living in villages without electricity, if he will take steps to remedy the shortage without delay.

Mr. Ellis Smith

Yes, Sir. I am afraid this shortage has been general, but out put is rapidly increasing, and it is hoped that supplies will be adequate to meet all home demands before the summer.

Mr. Osborne

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this is not going to help my people through the dark winter? Cannot something be done now?

Mr. Smith

The company concerned estimate that before the summer home demand will be completely met, and they will be in a position then to make a contribution to the export trade.

Mr. Osborne

Why not this winter?
