HC Deb 23 August 1945 vol 413 c757
Sir Waldron Smithers

I have the honour to present a Petition signed by 17,340 housewives of Britain in the following terms: To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled. The Honourable Petition of the undersigned inhabitants of Britain showeth that the housewives of Britain suffer great hardship by reason of the necessity to queue up for the necessaries of life which bears hardest on mothers of families, the aged, the sick, the business and factory workers and expectant mothers, and by reason of the shortage of labour and transport in the food industry and by reason of the delay in granting licences and permits to open new stores and shops. Wherefore your Petitioners humbly pray that your Honourable House will be pleased to grant them such relief as to your Honourable House may seem fit.
