HC Deb 21 August 1945 vol 413 cc451-2
74. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will con- sider the possibility of allowing small amounts of money, say up to £5, to be sent to friends outside the British Isles.

Mr. Dalton

Remittances may be made freely to any destination within the sterling area. I cannot at present give general permission for such remittances to destinations outside the sterling area, but applications on grounds of hardship will receive consideration.

Mr. Freeman

Would there be an opportunity of making some suggestion later on in regard to non-sterling areas?

Mr. Dalton

The decision not to give permission outside the sterling area is a general decision of policy, and I shall be prepared to consider any particular cases of individual hardship which my hon. Friend puts up. No doubt the general question can be debated at a suitable moment.
