HC Deb 28 September 1944 vol 403 c388
4. Sir J. Mellor

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will give an assurance that his Ministry's employment exchanges, including the appointments department, will not be given a monopoly in placing men and women in employment when demobilisation begins.

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir. While the reallocation of man-power during the interim period following the defeat of Germany must involve in some measure a continuance of control over industry and labour, it is not part of my plans that my Department should be given a legal monopoly in placing men and women in employment.

Sir J. Mellor

Will the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that full scope will be given for the activities of the commercial fee-charging. agencies?

Mr. Bevin

I cannot give any undertaking in respect of any particular form of interest until the war is over.

Sir J. Mellor

Does the right hon. Gentleman not want the co-operation of every form of agency?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, I shall need co-operation; but it must be remembered that the war is not over yet.
