HC Deb 26 September 1944 vol 403 cc37-8
75. Sir John Mellor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give a recent estimate of the expected net receipts of the Exchequer, and of the expected payments, under Part I. of the War Damage Act, 1943; and any previous estimates made by the Treasury under Section 80 of that Act, or Section 22 of the War Damage Act, 1941.

Sir J. Anderson:

The presence of several incalculable factors, including the possibility of further damage such as that which the country has recently sustained, has made it impossible as yet to make any reliable estimate of the total expected payments. With regard to receipts, the estimate made when the original Act was introduced, namely, that the contribution prescribed would produce about £200 million, still holds good.
