HC Deb 25 October 1944 vol 404 cc144-5
8. Captain Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, whether Marshal Tito's negotiations with Bulgarian politicians, regarding the use of Bulgarian troops in Yugoslavia, have been conducted with the knowledge of, and in accordance with, the advice of His Majesty's Government.

Mr. Law

No, Sir. His Majesty's Government had no prior knowledge of these negotiations which were of a military character. The second part of the Question does not therefore arise.

Captain Duncan

Is Marshal Tito's action not in conflict with the proposed armistice terms set out by the United Nations for Bulgaria? What does my right hon. Friend propose to do with Marshal Tito in that respect?

Mr. Law

No, Sir, I think Marshal Tito's action is not in conflict with anything, except in a purely technical sense. In these things it is obviously desirable, and the House will agree, that the greatest possible pressure should be brought to bear upon the enemy, and that is the main consideration.
