HC Deb 25 October 1944 vol 404 cc156-7
34. Mr. Astor

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works whether, in view of the shortage of slaters and tilers and of the unsatisfactory nature of felt roofing under winter conditions, he will consider using metal roofing for houses in the London area.

Mr. Hicks

I am glad to be able to inform my hon. Friend that corrugated metal, as well as corrugated asbestos cement sheets, are being used to provide roof cover during the winter. I must, however, add that roofing felt, properly used, is also giving adequate and acceptable roofing for the winter. All suitable materials and methods are being employed.

Mr. Astor

I suppose the operative words are "properly used." In view of the great importance of using new materials or methods for roofing during this winter, will my hon. Friend give further particulars during the Debate on Friday?

Sir Richard Wells

What is the position of manufacturers of roofing tiles at present? Are there to be increased supplies?

Mr. Hicks

Whether I shall make a statement on Friday depends on whether I shall get an opportunity; but certainly the information will be available for the Debate. In regard to the question of an increased supply of roofing tiles, that matter is receiving very urgent consideration, and preparations are now being made.
