HC Deb 25 October 1944 vol 404 c172
69. Squadron-Leader Sir Gifford Fox

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport the number of accidents in which American transport has been involved, in the country in general and in Oxfordshire, in particular, since 1st January, 1944; and whether steps are taken to warn American drivers of the dangerous surface of many British roads in the autumn.

Mr. Noel-Baker

I am making inquiries and will communicate with my hon. and gallant Friend.

Sir G. Fox

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the standard of driving of American vehicles is steadily deteriorating; that casualties on the road are increasing, especially at night; and what are the American authorities doing to stop this slaughter?

Mr. Noel-Baker

The American authorities have helped us in every possible way by helping their drivers to adapt themselves to our conditions, which are very different from those in the United States. I would not at all accept my hon. and gallant Friend's assertion that casualties have been increased.

Mr. A. Edwards

Cannot arrangements be made to reduce their speed?
