HC Deb 17 October 1944 vol 403 cc2199-200
56. Mr. Craven-Ellis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether under the Bretton Woods Final Act the gold value of sterling is to be legally defined.

Sir J. Anderson

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. Craven-Ellis

Does that mean we shall have the same flexibility as we enjoyed from 1933 to 1936 which was destroyed by the Tripartite Currency Agreement?

Sir J. Anderson

I cannot interpret every aspect of the Bretton Woods scheme in answer to questions.
