HC Deb 17 October 1944 vol 403 cc2203-4
69. Lieut.-Commander Joynson-Hicks

asked the Secretary of State for War what steps are being taken to remove the road blocks and other military obstructions in West Sussex; and whether he has informed the local authorities concerned of his proposals.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport (Mr. Noel-Baker)

I have been asked to reply. The highway authorities have been informed that all road blocks may now be removed, and, as I said in answer to a question on 3rd October, I am sure that those authorities will remove them as quickly as they can with the labour available.

Lieut.-Commander Joynson-Hicks

Will the Minister state whether his Department assumes financial responsibility for the removal?

Mr. Noel-Baker

The Secretary of State for War said, in answer to a Question some time ago, that the cost would be brought to the account of my Department.

Lieut. - Colonel Sir Thomas Moore

Cannot prisoners of war be diverted to release the beaches for the people of this country?

Mr. Noel-Baker

If we can have more prisoners we shall gladly use them for that purpose.

Mr. De la Bére

Are there not other things that want removing?
