HC Deb 04 October 1944 vol 403 cc922-3
43. Mr. Riley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether there are any fully-qualified ophthalmic specialists in the service of the Government of Nigeria; and whether the service of such specialists is available to inhabitants of the Colony.

Colonel Stanley

A Government medical officer fully qualified in ophthalmology has been attached to the Nigerian Government and his services have been available to the public at the Government Ophthal- mic Clinic. I understand that he will shortly be leaving Nigeria and I am inquiring of the Governor as to the arrangements which he proposes then to make. Mr. Sorensen: Has he any assistants adequate to the task?

Colonel Stanley

He has assistants, I think, but there is in Nigeria, I understand, only one other fully qualified practitioner.

Mr. Riley

Does not the right and gallant Gentleman consider it advisable that there should be a greater supply of ophthalmic assistants in Nigeria with its 20,000,000 people?

Colonel Stanley

The hon. Gentleman must realise that there is an extreme scarcity of medical practitioners all over the world to-day, and I am governed, not by what I desire to have, but by what I can get.
