§ 44. Sir Reginald Clarryasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he can now give any further indication of the Government's intention to construct considerable lengths of motorways in this country as soon as possible after the war for experimental purposes; and whether, as the absence of any clear policy on this subject is hindering all branches of the road transport industry in formulating their post-war plans, he will take an early opportunity of making a clear statement of policy on the construction of such motorways.
§ Mr. Noel-BakerThe construction of motorways will have to be authorised by an Act of Parliament. Proposals for the necessary legislation are now being discussed with the Association of Highway Authorities. I have received no evidence which supports by hon. Friend's suggestion that difficulty has been caused to the Road Transport Industry, but if he will give particulars of what he has in mind, I will consider what I can do in the matter.
§ Sir R. ClarryIs it the intention of my hon. Friend's Department to put down any experimental lengths of road, and if so, when?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerWe intend to build what are called "suitable lengths," but that can only be done when Parliament has agreed that it should be done.
