asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the size of the prison population at a recent convenient date; the number of persons employed in the prison service; the number of prison commissioners; and the salary paid to each commissioner.

Mr. H. Morrison

The prison population on the 24th October, 1944, was 13,257. The number of persons employed in the prison service on the 1st October, 1944, was 3,242. There are three Prison Commissioners. The salary of the Chairman is £1,700; that of the other two Commissioners is £1,200 rising by annual increments of £50 to £1,400.
