§ 18. Commander Sir Archibald Southbyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent civilian British subjects were called upon to produce their identity cards during the check-up of identity cards, which took place on the evening of 16th May; and whether the demand was made by British police or 910 military personnel, or by members of the U.S.A. Armed Forces.
§ Mr. H. MorrisonI understand that this examination was conducted for the purpose of detecting absentees from the Armed Forces of the United States, and that in the course of it some civilians were asked to produce their identity cards by the British police, who accompanied the American military police for the purpose. I have no definite information that civilians were asked to produce their identity cards by the United States Armed Forces, but I am assured that, if this did occur, it was contrary to instructions and that steps will be taken to prevent any recurrence.
