HC Deb 25 May 1944 vol 400 c932
Mr. Pethick Lawrence

(by Private Notice) asked the Prime Minister whether he has any statement to make as to when the interim report of the Conference on Electoral Reform and Redistribution of Seats presided over by Mr. Speaker may be expected?

Mr. Attlee

Yes, Sir. Yesterday my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister received a letter from you, Mr. Speaker, giving the recommendations made by the Conference on three of their four terms of reference—namely, redistribution of seats; reform of franchise; and methods of election. The report will be presented to Parliament at once as a Command Paper, and prints will be made available as soon as possible.

The House will not expect comment at this stage on the proposals made by the Conference, but the Prime Minister would like to say how much His Majesty's Government appreciate the speed and thoroughness with which the Conference has discharged so substantial a portion of its weighty task.
