HC Deb 24 May 1944 vol 400 cc739-40
44. Sir Stanley Reed

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether any decision has been reached as to the future use, if any, of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Mr. Noel-Baker

The future of the Kennet and Avon Canal, as of other canals, must depend on decisions on post-war policy which it has not yet been possible for the Government to make.

Sir S. Reed

Would not a considerable amount of labour, and also the money being utilised for the maintenance of the Kennet and Avon Canal, be absolutely wasted if it was not put into service in the post-war period?

Mr. Noel-Baker

I will look into that point. The main point is as I explained in my original reply.
