§ 35. Mr. Thomas Fraserasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what provision is made for the destitute workless in Jamaica when no work can be given them; and what is the estimated number of such persons.
§ Colonel StanleyThe destitute workless, for whom no employment can be found, are afforded temporary relief on application to the parochial boards. Some 11,000 persons who would otherwise be destitute workless are employed under various Government schemes. Though there is no complete record of the number of destitute workless not so provided with em- 736 ployment this number seems to be inconsiderable.
§ Mr. FraserCannot the right hon. and gallant Gentleman tell us what sort of provision is made for the people who cannot be given relief work?
§ Colonel StanleyAs I have said, they are afforded temporary relief on application to the parochial boards.
§ Mr. FraserWhat is the extent of that relief ?
§ Colonel StanleyIf the hon. Member wants the actual details, I will get them, but he will realise that it takes some time to get the figures from the Colonies.
