HC Deb 23 May 1944 vol 400 cc558-9
16. Mr. Vernon Bartlett

asked the Secretary of State for War whether applications for accreditation as war correspondents by French broadcasters and journalists have been granted.

Sir J. Grigg

Representatives of the Agence Francaise Independente have been accredited as war correspondents to British Forces in North Africa and the Middle East. I understand that applications have been received for other theatres and are being considered.

Mr. Bartlett

Is it a fact that applications which have been received for French correspondents to go to their own country when the invading armies go there have not yet been accepted?

Sir J. Grigg

That is a matter for the supreme Commander and not for the War Office.

Mr. Bartlett

Will the right hon. Gentleman try to bring pressure on the supreme Commander?

Mr. Shinwell

In view of the active participation of the French Forces in the war, can we be assured that no restriction will be imposed on any of these journalists?

Sir J. Grigg

I am not in a position to give an assurance one way or the other.
