62. Lieut.-Commander Gurney Braithwaiteasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what annual saving he anticipates in the payments made to civil servants in His Majesty's Forces in supplementation of their service pay and allowances as a result of the new rates announced in Cmd. 6521; and whether he can give any estimate of the comparable saving by local authorities.
§ Sir J. AndersonI regret that I have not the necessary information on which to base an estimate under either head.
Lieut.-Commander BraithwaiteAre the various allowances taken into account, or are they ignored and only basic pay considered, in connection with such supplementation? If that is done, are not civil servants given preferential treatment over other people?
§ Sir J. AndersonI would like to see that question on the Paper before I attempted to answer it.
