HC Deb 03 May 1944 vol 399 cc1320-1
49. Mr. McKinlay

asked the Minister of Food what steps he proposes to take to ensure that adequate supplies are available for distribution in the West of Scotland of the picnic hams off the ration, announced by his Ministry, and if local food offices and traders have had any instructions on the matter.

Colonel Llewellin

Arrangements have been made for all areas of the country, including the West of Scotland, to receive a proportionate share of the small supplies of picnic hams now being distributed. Wholesalers have been instructed to allocate them to all their customers as fairly as possible proportionately to ration bacon permits.

Mr. McKinlay

Before official pronouncements are made by the Minister on the wireless should not local people be consulted to avoid an impression being created throughout the country that shopkeepers have stocks of these things, thus placing retailers in a very difficult position?

Colonel Llewellin

I think the announcement referred to a small quantity. We had a small quantity of this particular type of ham, which is not suitable for the bacon ration, and we issued it off the ration to shops proportionately to their bacon permits.
