§ 58. Mr. Boothbyasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will set up 1251 a committee to examine the financial position and future prospects of our fishing harbours and to make recommendations with the object of enabling such harbours as are essential to the efficient conduct of the white, herring and inshore fishing industries to be properly repaired, equipped and maintained after the war.
Mr. JohnstonI have been asked to reply. As I explained in my answer to the hon. Member on 29th February, action is already being taken to enable fishery harbours to be kept in proper repair, and to ensure the maintenance of essential local services. Full particulars regarding the financial position of the various harbours have been obtained and will be kept in view in the framing of schemes for the post-war development of the fishing industry. Meanwhile, the provision of further assistance will be considered in any case in which it is shown that such assistance is necessary.
§ Mr. BoothbyWill my right hon. Friend bear in mind that some harbours, in particular, have a very heavy burden of debt, which has been incurred over the last 20 years, and that they will find it very difficult to carry on unless they receive special assistance?
Mr. JohnstonThe very last sentence of my answer indicated that assistance would be given in every case where it was thought that such assistance would be necessary.
§ Mr. PetherickDoes the answer apply to England as well as to Scotland?
