§ 3. Sir Alfred Beitasked the Secretary of State for War whether it is proposed to extend war service grants to the families, resident in Cyprus, of Cypriots now serving in the Forces.
§ Sir J. GriggA proposal to this effect has been received and is being given consideration.
§ Sir A. BeitIs it not a fact that a similar system was instituted in Egypt, and might it not be convenient if that system were to cover Cyprus?
§ Sir J. GriggDoes my hon. Friend perhaps mean Palestine?
§ Sir A. BeitMore or less.
§ Sir J. GriggIt is not quite the same thing. There is a scheme in Palestine which has some resemblance to this but the circumstances are not on all fours. As I say, a proposal is now under consideration, but I cannot go beyond that at the moment.
Miss WardWill the scheme also apply to Cypriots, Maltese and Palestinians resident in Egypt and called up under the Conscription Act there?
§ Sir J. GriggI will make a note of the hon. Lady's point in the course of the consideration which is being given to the scheme. But as no final decision has been given, I cannot tell her whether the scheme will apply to any particular place.
