asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether effect has now been given to the recommendation of Mr. Alexander Paterson that a woman justice of the peace should be appointed to assist in the trial of juvenile cases in Gambia.

Mrs. Hannah Mahoney has been appointed to be a Justice of the Peace within the Colony of the Gambia with effect from the 1st January last. Mrs. Mahoney is a member of a specially constituted bench of justices that has been set up to deal with juvenile offenders.

In these appointments will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman bear in mind the desirability of selecting qualified Africans?
