HC Deb 22 March 1944 vol 398 cc854-5
47. Mr. Hugh Lawson

asked the Minister of Production if he will ensure that there is a planned reduction of the demand on industry to correspond with the planned call up of further labour from industry; and if he is aware that the present practice of leaving reduction of output to arise through default rather than through planning, causes frustration and waste of effort to industrial management.

The Minister of Production (Mr. Lyttelton)

The rate and extent of the withdrawal of man-power from industry for the Armed Forces is in fact planned so far as is possible in relation to the overall requirements of the Forces for personnel on the one hand, and for stores and equipment on the other. I do not agree that reduction of output is left to arise by default.

Mr. Lawson

Surely the right hon. Gentleman will agree that a reduction in output is bound to occur and that it is his responsibility—

Mr. Speaker

The hon. Member is asking for the Minister's opinion and not for information.
