HC Deb 22 March 1944 vol 398 c857
54. Mr. James Glanville

asked the Minister of Food what action has been taken to secure the construction of a new British Restaurant at Stanley, County Durham, in view of the unsatisfactory condition of the present building, of which he has been previously notified.

Colonel Llewellin

I regret that I do not feel justified in approving the district council's proposal to erect a new building to house their existing British Restaurant.

Mr. Glanville

Is the Minister aware that the tin chimney of the building blew off, with the result that the flues were choked and no cooking could be carried on, and that before the women can commence work in the Mornings they have to get soldiers who are billeted nearby to rid the place of rats?

Colonel Llewellin

We sent one of our officials up there and he looked at this restaurant. It would be a good scheme to build another but for the restrictions on building materials and labour.
