HC Deb 15 March 1944 vol 398 c236
40. Mr. John Dugdale

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will state the salaries paid in Nigeria to European and African doctors, respectively, with the same qualifications.

Colonel Stanley

There are two scales of salary in Nigeria for Government medical officers who are required to have similar minimum professional qualifications. Those not domiciled in West Africa and appointed by me to the Colonial Medical Service start at £660 and rise by increments to £1,200. Those domiciled in West Africa and appointed locally start at £400 and rise to £720.

Mr. Dugdale

Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman say why there is this distinction, and whether it is not a fact that Africans domiciled in Nigeria have a definitely lower salary than Europeans who come to do the work now?

Colonel Stanley

I dealt with this matter rather fully last week, in answer to a Question.
