HC Deb 15 March 1944 vol 398 c233
44. Mr. Riley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the unrest among the inhabitants of Mauritius due to increasing prices and a steep rise in the cost of living; whether he will consider the regulation of prices of essential commodities and also fix minimum wages in consonance with the increased cost of living.

Colonel Stanley

The causes of the recent unrest in Mauritius are the subject of an investigation by a Commission of Enquiry. All possible measures of control of price and distribution of essential commodities are being constantly taken by the Colonial Government. Minimum wage rates for categories of monthly employed workers have been increased as recently as the beginning of this year.

Mr. Riley

Can the right hon. and gallant Gentleman say whether the increases correspond with the increased cost of living for workers in Mauritius?

Colonel Stanley

If the hon. Gentleman will look at the very full answer which I gave on 19th January, he will find all the information.
