HC Deb 08 March 1944 vol 397 cc2042-3
37. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport if he is aware of the proposal of the local authorities to form a North Staffordshire Transport Board; that it is the intention of the city of Stoke-on-Trent to organise a transport department after the war and arrive at an understanding with local omnibus companies; and if he will take steps to restrain the proposed merger between a subsidiary of the British Electric Traction Company and the Associated Omnibus Company in view of the restrictions on municipalities and the desirability of avoiding controversial measures during the war.

Mr. Noel-Baker

I have received no proposals for the creation of a North Staffordshire Transport Board. Such proposals, if put forward by the competent local authorities would require the consent of Parliament. I do not think that the purchase of one local omnibus undertaking by another could prejudice the action either of the local authorities, or of Parliament. I should not, therefore, feel justified in objecting to any such transaction on the grounds suggested by my hon. Friend.
