§ 37. Mr. Ellis Smithasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport if he is aware of the proposal of the local authorities to form a North Staffordshire Transport Board; that it is the intention of the city of Stoke-on-Trent to organise a transport department after the war and arrive at an understanding with local omnibus companies; and if he will take steps to restrain the proposed merger between a subsidiary of the British Electric Traction Company and the Associated Omnibus Company in view of the restrictions on municipalities and the desirability of avoiding controversial measures during the war.
§ Mr. Noel-BakerI have received no proposals for the creation of a North Staffordshire Transport Board. Such proposals, if put forward by the competent local authorities would require the consent of Parliament. I do not think 2043 that the purchase of one local omnibus undertaking by another could prejudice the action either of the local authorities, or of Parliament. I should not, therefore, feel justified in objecting to any such transaction on the grounds suggested by my hon. Friend.
