HC Deb 29 June 1944 vol 401 c798
49. Sir T. Moore

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will consider introducing legislation as a war-time measure to alter the law which forbids the erection of signboards on Crown property, which, in the opinion of near-by residents, disturb the amenities of the property.

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr. R. S. Hudson)

No, Sir.

Sir T. Moore

Because of the noise I did not catch the reply.

Mr. Hudson

The answer is "No, Sir."

Sir T. Moore

Why this discrimination between the Salvation Army signs on their hostels about which I have informed my right hon. Friend, and defeatist signs "To let" and "To sell," which are permitted on property?

Mr. Hudson

I understand that signs can be erected but certain conditions have to be complied with. In the case quoted by my hon. and gallant Friend the conditions had not been complied with.

Sir T. Moore

Why this objection to the amenities being disturbed by these signs, while Hitler is destroying amenities every day?

Mr. Sorensen

May it not be because the Salvation Army sign is that of "Blood and Fire?"
