§ 19. Mr. Ivor Thomasasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he is aware of the system in use on the Cardiff trolley-buses known as "Pay-as-you-enter," whereby passengers put one penny into a transparent container on entering the vehicle as prepayment for any journey; and whether, in view of the saving of time, tickets and temper involved, he will consider an extension of this system to other areas.
§ Mr. Noel-BakerI have noted with interest the form of the "Pay-as-youenter" system of collecting omnibus fares which is in use on certain routes in Cardiff, and to which my hon. Friend refers. The method of collecting fares, however, is settled by each undertaking for itself, and I have, therefore, no power to secure the extended use of this system.
§ Mr. ThomasCould my hon. Friend draw the attention of the various authorities to the advantages of this system?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerFrankly, I doubt whether it is capable of any wide extension. It would profoundly affect the economic basis of any undertaking which adopted it, and, in many cases, it might Co so adversely.
Colonel Sir Arthur EvansHas the hon. Gentleman received any official complaint in reference to the system in Cardiff?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerNot that I am aware of.
