65. Miss Wardasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the financial arrangements made for the population in the countries which have been occupied by the Allies since the outbreak of war; and whether there has been any variation of the policy with regard to France.
§ Mr. AsshetonSpecial military currency is being used in Italy, Sicily and certain of the ex-Italian colonies. It was used for a short time in French North Africa, but was thereafter replaced by local francs. As regards Metropolitan France, I would refer the hon. Lady to the reply which my right hon. Friend gave yesterday to my hon. Friend the Member for East Wolverhampton (Mr. Mander).
67. Mr. Graham Whiteasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the arrangements which have been made for the redemption of the military franc notes now being issued and to be issued in French liberated territory.
§ Mr. AsshetonI would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which my right hon. Friend gave my hon. Friend the Member for East Wolverhampton (Mr. Mander) yesterday on this matter.
Mr. Graham WhiteMay I ask my right hon. Friend, without wishing to anticipate the statement promised yesterday, whether he would now like to assure the House that financial commitments were not entered into, before arrangements were made for the redemption of the notes?
§ Mr. AsshetonI am afraid I cannot add anything to what was said by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
§ Mr. Edgar GranvilleCan the right hon. Gentleman say whether the military franc notes are now being issued in France?
§ Mr. AsshetonI have already given my hon. Friend the only answer I can give.
