HC Deb 21 June 1944 vol 401 c186
56. Mr. Turton

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what are the Junctions of the new Social Services Department which is to be set up in the Gold Coast; and what will be the duties of the seven specially selected men from the Gold Coast who are now undergoing a course of training in the United Kingdom preparatory to being posted to this Department.

Colonel Stanley

As the Social Services Department in the Gold Coast is only just being established, its precise scope and organisation must be a matter for experiment, but the principal function of the Secretary for Social Services is to ensure effective co-ordination of the work of the different Government Departments and other agencies concerned in social welfare. A senior welfare officer has been appointed and this officer with the seven Gold Coast officers to whom my hon. Friend refers will be engaged in day to day work in such fields as probation, juvenile delinquency, youth activities, village betterment societies, and the welfare problems of rehousing schemes.

Mr. Turton

Was this Social Services Department set up as a result of Sir Alexander Paterson's visit, or did it arise in another way?

Colonel Stanley

No, Sir. It was no doubt discussed with him during his visit, but the Governor talked it over with me when I was out there last August.
