§ 34. Mr. Henderson Stewartasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what local authorities, including small burghs, were consulted before the Rent Tribunal was set up in East Fife; and what are the names and qualifications of the members of the tribunal.
§ The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. T. Johnston)Local authorities were not directly consulted, but the convenor of the county and the provosts of all but three of the burghs in Central and East Fife 18 were invited to submit personal recommendations for membership of the tribunal. The exceptions were three small burghs whose councils, at the time of the invitations, had already decided against the application of the Act to their areas.
The members of the tribunal are:—
Mr. William Lyon, Kirkcaldy; Chairman of the Local Council for Educational Advance and a member of the Public Libraries Committee.
- Mr. Walter Herd, Solicitor, Kirkcaldy (Chairman);
- Mr. James G. White, Chartered Surveyor, Markinch;
Mr. StewartIn view of the assurance which my right hon. Friend gave when this matter was before the House, can he assure me now that local authorities in East Fife, on the whole, expressed a desire for this court to be set up?
§ Mr. JohnstonThat is another question. I can only say that three authorities in this particular area expressed the view that they did not desire to have this court.
§ Mr. GallacherWould the Minister consider getting some working class men and women on a committee of that kind?
§ Mr. JohnstonThe tribunals are working very satisfactorily.
