HC Deb 07 June 1944 vol 400 c1339
31. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of acute water shortage in Freetown during February and March each year; and what steps are being taken to secure an adequate supply throughout that period.

Colonel Stanley

I am aware that the water supply in Freetown has to be restricted during the end of each dry season. The steps that have been taken to improve the position include the construction of new reservoirs and the reopening of wells, and the Government are examining a project for the construction of a further storage reservoir with a substantially greater capacity than is available at present.

Mr. Sorensen

May I take it that, if that is carried out, water will then be available, especially during the important months of February and March?

Colony Stanley

That should solve the problem. When I was out there in the autumn, they had run into technical difficulties which were holding them up, but I have asked for a report up to date.
