HC Deb 07 June 1944 vol 400 c1328
4. Mr. Granville

asked the Secretary' of State for Foreign Affairs whether the members of the German Legation staff and other German agents have now left Tangier.

Mr. Eden

With the possible exception of one or two members of the clerical staff, all members of the staff of the German Consulate-General at Tangier have now left the Tangier Zone, and, in accordance with the terms of the recent agreement, they will not remain in metropolitan Spain or in any Spanish-controlled territory. Some German agents have already left the Tangier Zone. His Majesty's Ambassador at Madrid and His Majesty's Consul-General at Tangier are pressing the Spanish authorities to arrange for the early departure of such German agents as still remain in the Zone.

Mr. Granville

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that reply; might I ask if he is satisfied that the rest of the Agreement with His Majesty's Government is being satisfactorily carried out?

Mr. Eden

Yes, I think so. On this point, it is satisfactory that the consul-general and his staff have gone, but it is not quite so easy to identify German agents as it is to identify consular officials.
