§ 4. Mr. G. Straussasked the Secretary of State for War why an order made by Colonel Johnson, Military Governor of Rome, supported by Lieutenant-Colonel Lane, Chief Labour Officer for Rome, recommending an increase by 15 per cent. of the wages of civilians employed by the allied armies, bringing these up to the level paid by the Germans, has been rescinded by General Alexander.
§ 5. Mr. Dobbieasked the Secretary of State for War why the increase of wages to civilian workers in Rome decided upon by Colonel Johnson, Military Governor of Rome, on the recommendation of Lieutenant-Colonel T. A. Lane, Chief Labour Officer, was countermanded by General Alexander; by what authority General Alexander assumed this power; and, as this decision puts the wages below the rate paid to these civilian workers by the Germans, will he take steps to have the case investigated.
§ Sir J. GriggI am making inquiries into this.
